Instead of the spatially-varying p-system, Gideon Simpson has suggested considering the model system
\[ u_t = v_x \] \[ v_t = (K(x)u + u^2/2)_x \]
in which the spatial variation and the nonlinearity are separated. It would be interesting to see if this system generates the same kinds of dynamics (solitary wave formation) as the spatially-varying \(p\)-system.
