Tareq/20 February 2012 individual meeting

Accomplishments (since our last meeting)

Preparations for the summer internship. Involved phone interviews, emails, writing research proposal, and accommodation preparations near ANL for the summer

  • IJHPCA paper review.
  • Partial attendance to the HPC^3-2012 workshop
  • Trying to gain momentum in my classes, AMCS 251 and AMCS 252. I am optimizing how I study so that I can complete my tasks on time.
  • I read your guideline document and explored some of the provided links. I have some points in consideration already and some on my to do list.

Questions

  • I need advice on how to study math classes efficiently, involving book annotation looking for better explanations online, to get the most out of the material

Plans for next week

  • Read a paper or two that would help me in crafting my PhD proposal

I need suitable papers as a starting point. I know that I have to do this on my own later, but I do not have enough knowledge to drive my research in the field yet. Or should I spend sometime to do this on my own?

  • Improving my time management to complete my course work requirements and keep sufficient time for research work. I am taking this seriously, especially after not doing well in my assignments, although I worked hard. I am targeting 60 hours/week of work. Also, I am doing a temporary profiling on how I spend my work time, so that I can optimize it and distribute my time fairly over my commitments.

Other matters

  • Regarding the group webpage, I have my information at the Extreme Computing Group. Do you think it would be a good idea to maintain my information on both groups?
  • Regarding the backup drive, I am already placing my critical data on Dropbox, which is synchronized on four operating systems on two machines. Also, I use bitbucket for my code and papers. Do I still need to use a backup drive?

Meeting Summary

  • Aron mentions Write, Think, Learn.
  • David recommends full backups.
  • Aron requests Tareq tells us how he divided his time next week.
  • Tareq will read a paper and give a summary each week.
